Save Money at Safeway

We’re up to number five in our series where we teach you how to save money at five of the nation’s leading retailers. We’ve covered how to save money at CVS, Kroger, Walgreens and Target; now we take a look at Safeway, the second largest supermarket chain in the country. You may know the store as Carrs, Vons or Tom Thumb (among others), but they’re all owned by the same company.

Here’s what you need to know about Safeway before shopping:

Sales Cycle: Safeway sales cycles run Wednesday through Tuesday, meaning that advertised sales prices change on Wednesday.

What’s more? While shopping, look for special shelf tags and signs for savings exclusively for Safeway Club members and receive special discounts on Safeway gasoline at participating locations (for every $100 you spend, you’ll save $0.10 off per gallon).

Coupon Policy:

  • Safeway accepts the following types of coupons: Safeway store coupons, manufacturer coupons, Internet printable coupons, eCoupons (which you can download directly to your card at Just4U or, and P&G eSaver), and Catalina coupons. Safeway does not accept competitor coupons and will not match competitor prices.
  • Safeway allows you to stack one manufacturer coupon and one store coupon per item. You can then use Catalinas in addition to these coupons.
  • For promotional “Buy One, Get One Free” (BOGO) sales, you may NOT use two manufacturer’s coupons, resulting in two free items.
  • Safeway does not offer “overage,” meaning they will never pay you to take the item out of the store. So if the coupon value exceeds the purchase price of an item, the cashier will adjust the price of the item to match the coupon amount.
  • Some Safeway stores will double coupons, usually under $0.50. Check your store’s policy to see if they offer this promotion.
  • All Internet printable coupons must have a bar code and expiration date.
  • Safeway does offer rain checks, or a piece of paper that you’ll get when the store is out of an item that is on sale, for up to six items unless otherwise noted. Once the item is back in stock, you can use your rain check to purchase it for the sale price, including any coupon offers. At Safeway, rain checks expire 90 days from the issue date.
